Turned Wood of Distinction
About the Artist
Chris
Ramsey was born in New York City, educated in Utah, California, and
Kentucky. He is married and the proud father of two sons. Ramsey began
turning on a Delta lathe and became absorbed with the art form. Currently
his primary lathe is a 3 hp Oneway
2436.
In his early days of turning,
the hobby consumed him and he spent most of his free time seeking felled
trees and perfecting his technique. He has studied with a variety of
outstanding turners and quickly rose to the level of master turner.
Ramsey has been a technician
in the electronics industry, a manager for a construction company, a
builder, a facilities manager of a major bank, and owned and operated
his own business (American
Network Cable of Somerset, Kentucky.) He turns in a variety of styles
and is constantly seeking to develop new styles and approaches to the
art of wood turning.
An award-winning wood turner,
Ramsey has taken first place in various competitions. Of his 'Best of
the Show' Fine Arts Division award at the 2000 Kentucky State Fair,
Courier Journal columnist
Byron Crawford wrote, "The must-see item is the cowboy hat that
Somerset wood turner Chris Ramsey fashioned from a large burled white
oak stump..." (Louisville Courier Journal, August 18, 2000) His
rapid rise to the top level of turners is easily seen in his work. Never
one to remain content with what he has accomplished, Ramsey constantly
seeks ways to improve his technique and efficiency as a turner. He is
in demand as a clinician and frequently presents demonstrations of the
fine art of wood turning. He is cited as being one of the top woodturning instructors in the country. Having been a member of the American
Association of Woodturners, Southern
Highland Craft Guild, Kentucky
Guild of Artists & Craftsmen, Kentucky
Art and Craft Foundation, Kentucky
Craft Marketing Program (a program of the Kentucky Arts Council)
and Sheltowee Artisans, he
has exhibited throughout the United States, the Far East and Europe.
